Lost Near-Space Payload
Hello!
I am a member of both LILUG (the Long Island Linux Users Group) and Island Labs, a hackerspace club based at Stony Brook University that draws many core members from LILUG.
Yesterday, May 1, we launched a second weather balloon to replicate the Project Icarus formula and confirm that our initial March 7 launch experiment success was repeatable.
Unfortunately, this experiment landed much farther downrange then predicted: According to our GPS data, it landed in the Long Island Sound just off the shoreline west of New London.
We are pleading with anyone along the CT shoreline to be on the lookout for our payload. The internal contents are most probably ruined from this length of exposure to salt water, but we’d like to try to recover the onboard data (including hi-res photos from a camera running CHDK).
There were also some “passengers” onboard…including some images of Tux printed on shrink-plastic.
Further details and photos of the train can be seen in the Craigslist lost+found posting we made:
http://newlondon.craigslist.org/laf/1721132915.html
Background info on our previous launch are on the Island Labs Web site:
www.islandlabs.org
Many thanks to our fellow free/open-source software enthusiasts in helping recover what’s left of the payload and spreading the word of our errant spacecraft.
Joseph Suda
member of LILUG, IslandLabs, and Linux on his desktop as the sole OS for 11 years and counting…

Meeting 1/24/2010: Build a Freeduino!
Arduino is a hardware device and software used to program it. An Arduino is used for the design and development of embedded computer systems. An Arduino consists of a simple open hardware design for a single-board microcontroller, with embedded I/O support and a standard programming language. An Arduino is programmed using the Wiring language, which is essentially C++ with a few simplifications. The Processing programming language is often used to interface a computer with an Arduino, often to create unorthodox interfaces.

Meeting 4/25/2010 - Arduino Ethernet Shield
The Ethernet Shield class is on! If you already have an Arduino, or built one at the last open source hardware class run by John/jpr3, and want to get that bad boy passing packets on a network, you can order your ethernet shield here:
http://www.nkcelectronics.com/arduino-ethernet-shield.html
The class will focus primarily on programming the board, and there should be little or no soldering required. For more details, see the update to this previous discussion thread:

Meeting 1/24/2010: Build a Freeduino!
I have been informed that the April 24th Ethernet Shield class is on. You can order yours here:
http://www.nkcelectronics.com/arduino-ethernet-shield.html
We will spend little or no time in building the board – but a lot more time in programming it. You can use it as a web server (e.g., switch lights on in your house from work through a Web site), use it to upload sensor data to a MySQL db, opr use it to Twitter and/or e-mail your friends.
This class will last just about 90 minutes. Feel free to e-mail me with any questions prior to the class at hotmail.com

Freeduino Class 1/24/2010
In case anyone is still looking, its hackermonkey.com and I would be up for a followup class with the shield. I think the arduino + shield would be great for making traffic light network monitor version 3. And wouldn’t require a whole laptop to drive it.
